Explore the exhibition Widening the Lens: Photography, Ecology, and the Contemporary Landscape to find examples of photographs, installations, and collage that will inspire works of your own. Look to photographer Charles “Teenie” Harris’s body of work to help compose portraits of your classmates and head outdoors to take images of the natural world using a variety of methods including pinhole photography. Experiment with camera-less methods like cyanotype and reconfigure images from magazines, old photographs, and reproductions of works in our collection to create something new.

Search the museum for the smallest specimens on display, look for mystery minerals, and discover how our eyes play tricks on us. Learn how animals use their brains and eyes as predators and prey, and conduct experiments with colors. Create your own camouflage and test it out on an Eye Spy adventure.

Get an inside look at paleontology from the gigantic Diplodocus to the tiny Archaeopteryx. Cover land, sea, and sky while searching for unusual pterosaurs, ichthyosaurs, birds, and mammals. Peek into PaleoLab where museum scientists work on fossils every day. Go on a dinosaur dig. Make a mask of your favorite prehistoric beast, and move like a dinosaur in a special relay race.

Move beyond the human form and exemplify the characteristics of animals or other subjects and find way to showcase their personality through color, texture, and style. Piece together a prehistoric mystery as you explore the science of paleontology. Map and excavate a mock dig site, wrap your finds in plaster fossil jackets, and transport them to the classroom. Build hands-on fossil prep skills by reconstructing discoveries and analyzing bones. Stack up your finds against the specimens in the exhibition Dinosaurs in Their Time to discover what bone you’ve found, which dinosaur it came from, and how that part of the skeleton functioned.

Learn more about your favorite dinosaurs! Get an up-close look at real fossils in the exhibition Dinosaurs in Their Time. Find out where these big bones came from and learn all about prehistoric animals. Dig for replica bones like a real paleontologist, make fossil casts, and study authentic dinosaur specimens. Meet the creatures that roamed with the dinosaurs—early mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and insects.  

This half-day camp keeps pace with active 4- and 5-year-olds and includes a mid-session snack.

We will create sports-themed artwork, move our bodies with gestures inspired by gymnastics and soccer, and transport ourselves to Paris, the location of the 2024 Summer Games.

Push, pull, squish, and play with clay into anything you can imagine—from a bowl you can use to sculpted figures of your pet or an imaginative creature of your own design. Become inspired by the organic forms of ceramic artist Beate Kuhn, mix mediums like found objects and plaster with multiple forms of clay, and construct figurative sculptures that stand, sit or dance suspended in motion. Kiln-fired projects will be fired and available for pick-up at the museum 3 to 4 weeks after camp.

Merge sound, light, and imagery to create dynamic film artworks. Experiment with nonnarrative forms of storytelling through abstracting techniques like long cuts, rapid editing, out-of-focus, and image altering. Explore the film’s progression by investigating celluloid through modern iPhone production and complete a short film of your own. Enjoy and discuss a curated work from the Film Series on Saturday, August 3, with your classmates and screen your works for the public. This program will occasionally meet outside of Carnegie Museum of Art’s campus.

A summer camp adventure 66 million years in the making! Piece together prehistoric evidence as you investigate how dinosaurs lived and why they died. Extract DNA from modern-day relatives of dinosaurs. Take a hike through the museum and nearby Schenley Park to compare today’s world to that of the dinosaurs. Build a full habitat, complete with life-size dinosaur murals, to transform your classroom into Jurassic Planet.

Conduct hands-on investigations of mud, rocks, minerals, and fossils. Enjoy edible experiments that demonstrate how rocks and minerals form. Take a hike to nearby Schenley Park to examine historic rock layers, and hunt for specimens to start your own collection. Study the fluorescent properties of different materials to inspire a glow-in-the-dark design. Use rocks to create your own musical instrument and discover the many ways geology rocks!
