Learn techniques by comparing old masters to the work of artists who continue to reinvent painting today. Learn lab techniques for analyzing rocks and minerals, then venture outdoors to practice the basics of geology field work on a hiking trip through Schenley Park. Explore the science of unique rock and mineral formations through hands-on experiments. Work with microscopes to investigate and identify fossils. Use your geology knowledge to interpret the hidden secrets of the world.

Get inventive and intentional with recycled materials to create extraordinary art out of the ordinary, while thinking about environmental impact. Explore the way artists reduce, reuse, recycle, and respond to environmental issues. Spend time outside exploring the environment for inspiration in your drawings and paintings. Take a trip to Phipps Conservatory to visit the Center for Sustainable Landscapes and collaborate with your fellow campers to create a collaborative installation.

Experience what it’s like to be a museum scientist—in the field and in the lab. Check out navigation tech and outdoor gear. Meet real scientists who have traveled around the world. Go outside every day to advance your skills in tracking animals and surveying their habitats for health and pollution indicators. Collect and analyze your own observations during a mini field study at Powdermill Nature Reserve.

What could be more fun than transforming a piece of the earth into an object of your own design? Combining technical skill with imagination, learn how to raise a form on the potter’s wheel and practice a variety of hand-building techniques. Make boxes, bowls, and cups, or sculpt animal forms that are realistic or abstract. Select and apply underglazes to give your work its finished appearance. Find inspiration in the artworks in the museum’s collection. Projects will be fired and available for pick-up three to four weeks after camp at the museum. A $25 materials fee is included in the price of this camp.

3, 2, 1... Action! Become an art camp filmmaker! Find inspiration from Carnegie Museum of Art’s collection and learn about the stories told in art. Bring your drawings, paintings, and sculptures to life in an animated stop-action sequence. Play, practice, perform, and collaborate with your fellow campers to create a short movie in the galleries! Use art materials to make scenery and props for your productions. Invite friends and family to your art movie premiere on the last day of camp.

Investigate healthy habitats and animal care for diverse species like bugs, lizards, and mammals. Learn about animal nutrition in the wild, and perform experiments to uncover the ingredients in dog food. Meet some furry friends. Analyze the behavior of animals large and small on an extended-day trip to the National Aviary. Compare animal anatomy by examining skeletons from museum specimens. Try your hand at real and/or digital dissections of insects, fish, and mammals.

Piece together a prehistoric mystery as you explore the science of paleontology. Map and excavate a mock dig site, wrap your finds in plaster fossil jackets, and transport them to the laboratory classroom. Build hands-on fossil prep skills by reconstructing discoveries and analyzing bones. Stack up your finds against the specimens in the exhibition Dinosaurs in Their Time to discover what bone you’ve found, which dinosaur it came from, and how that part of the skeleton functioned.

It’s Fashion Week at Carnegie Museum of Art! Be part of the team that designs, creates, and models original works of textile art. Learn how to tie-dye, hand sew, and use a sewing machine. Create your own fabrics with stamped patterns or other unique embellishments of your own design. Find inspiration for designs from our artwork collection. Make a mood board to get your ideas flowing! Organize and star in a runway show in the Hall of Architecture on the last day of camp to show off your creations!
