Ages 8–10

Design a house and learn how you can protect the earth at the same time! Challenge yourself to conserve water, capture solar energy, and use only renewable materials as you design the house of your dreams! You’ll find inspiration by visiting the galleries and the Intelligent Workplace at CMU’s School of Architecture, and you’ll explore creative ways to design and build your house by using a variety of architectural drawing and model-making methods. Camp includes a trip to Carnegie Mellon University’s Intelligent Workplace.

Push, pull, and squish clay into anything you can imagine—from functional vessels like bowls and cups that you can actually use to sculpted figures of your pet or an imaginative creature of your own design! Try out the potter's wheel and learn hand-building techniques inspired by artists in the museum collection. Use colorful glazes to give your work a personal touch. Projects will be fired and available for pickup three to four weeks after camp. Materials fee included in price.

Hunt for salamanders, set up insect traps, and “fish” for microplankton on biology expeditions. Soar to new heights as you study seed dispersal. Find animals in different ecosystems on hikes through nearby Schenley Park. Investigate woodlands and streams farther afield on an extended-day field trip to Powdermill Nature Reserve, the museum’s environmental research center.

Activity fee: $50

3, 2, 1... action! Become an art camp filmmaker and collaborate with your fellow campers to create movies. Find inspiration from the collection, create stories about the people depicted in paintings, and get creative with art materials to make scenery and props for your productions. DVDs of your movies will be mailed home at the end of the summer.

Unwrap archaeological mysteries by investigating the life and lore of ancient Egypt. Experience a day in the life of pharaohs, scribes, and other ancient Egyptians. Dig into ancient murals and create your own illustration in true Egyptian style. Get hands-on with the science of preserving mummies. Explore the stories of Egyptian gods and goddesses before unleashing your creativity as you write and perform your own mythical tale.

Journey into the wonder of the natural world as an artist and explorer. Take a nature walk through the museum galleries and discover how artists are inspired and fascinated by the world outside. Venture outdoors to see sculptures installed around the museum and go to Phipps Conservatory to sketch textures, shapes, and colors inspired by nature. Use your senses to paint, sketch, design, and transform your ideas into your own outdoor artwork.

Learn from the past and jump into the future as you discover how well-designed cities and community-wide practices can protect our environment. Make sketches, create drawings, and build models. Take a tour of places around Oakland, including CMU’s School of Architecture, and learn how art and technology combine to create sustainable buildings and landscapes. Find inspiration in the museum’s galleries for your own earth-friendly designs and then work as a team to design and build a model eco-city from the ground up. Camp includes a trip to Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Architecture.

Have you always dreamed of being a veterinarian? Investigate basic biology throughout the animal kingdom. Learn what you can do to help animals stay healthy—in the wild and in your backyard! Design and create idyllic habitats for animals in the museum’s popular Living Collection. Interact with animals of all shapes and sizes on an animal themed day trip.

Magic and science are about to collide! Craft your own potions and discover which concoctions are for friends and which are for foes. Investigate the science behind expanding elixirs and experiment with changing ordinary metals to gold in a lesson in alchemy. Explore transfiguration in the natural world. Compare magical creatures to those of the non-magical world as you study fire-breathing dragons, mystical mermaids, and more!

Travel to the future and make art and architecture inspired by an imagined future world. Think creatively about the world you know to create landscapes, architecture, clothing, and games that people of the future might inhabit, wear, and use. Catch a glimpse of futuristic landscapes and architecture in the museum’s galleries, then return to the present on the last day of camp to share your future paintings, drawings, and sculptures with your family and friends. Camp includes a trip to Carnegie Mellon University’s digital fabrication laboratory.

Earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis, and more—they’ve all changed life on our planet over and over again. Discover how people and ecosystems have responded to extreme events throughout geologic time. Construct model lava flows, asteroid impacts, and volcanoes. Build a model city and put it to the test with our mega-quake-tsunami challenge on Friday.

A summer camp adventure 65 million years in the making! Piece together prehistoric evidence as you investigate how dinosaurs lived and why they died. Extract DNA from modern-day relatives of dinosaurs. Take a hike through the museum and nearby Schenley Park to compare your world to that of the dinosaurs. Build a full habitat, complete with life-size dinosaur murals to transform your classroom into Jurassic Planet.

We’ve received a mysterious message from space—help us decode the transmission! Travel into the solar system and beyond as we trace the communication back to the senders. Compare Earth’s most extreme climates to distant planets’ and moons’, and determine what makes a hunk of space rock habitable. Plus, compete in a friendly design challenge as you craft a model rocket to travel to those far off celestial bodies.

Nature builds things up and tears them down—and so can you! Explore how humans and animals construct homes, buildings, and dens. Construct a classroom compost bin to delve into decomposition, and conduct an experiment to test the strength of the pyramids. Throughout the week, you’ll undertake a habitat design challenge using only naturally available resources, and we’ll visit Fallingwater to gain inspiration from an architectural masterpiece.

If space aliens built a city, what would it look like? Use your imagination and your most far-out ideas to create a city from another planet. What do your friends from outer space need in their city? How is it different from or similar to the world you live in on Earth?
