Big, bigger, biggest! Exercise your problem-solving skills to figure out how to build a huge skyscraper, a giant house, or an extra-tall castle—stretch your imagination to make it happen. Experiment with peers to find the best ways to build big with different materials. Bring your imagination and your biggest ideas!

Take your interest in rocks to the next level as you examine rocks, gems, minerals, and fossils in the lab and throughout the museum. Learn the tools of the geologists’ trade on a rock walk in Schenley Park. Start a take-home collection of rocks and minerals. Don a hard-hat and journey underground on a trip to the exhibition coal mine in Tarentum as we uncover the mysteries hidden beneath Earth’s surface.

Learn forensic science techniques, and use them to solve a museum mystery.

Apply left-brained thinking to a right-brained activity for unexpected results! Observe works of art in the galleries for ideas, hypothesize some “what-ifs,” then head to the lab for experimentation. Ink, graphite, rubber bands, straws, paint brushes, paper, wood, and plastic materials take you on a scientific journey! Don’t forget to record your process and results in your sketchbook/field journal. Then make a series of pieces based on your findings.

If space aliens built a city, what would it look like? Use your imagination and your most far-out ideas to create a city from another planet. What do your outer-space friends need in their city? How is it different from or similar to the world you live in on earth? Study the exhibition of award-winning architects in the galleries to look for interesting shapes, colors, and materials to incorporate into your design.

Push, pull, and squish clay into anything you can imagine: from functional vessels like bowls and cups you can actually use to sculpted figures of your pet or an imaginative creature of your own design! Try out the potter’s wheel and learn hand-building techniques inspired by artists in the museum collection. Use colorful glazes to give your work a personal touch. Projects will be fired and available for pick-up 3–4 weeks after camp. Materials fee included in price.

Find animals in different ecosystems on regular hikes through nearby Schenley Park. Investigate woodlands and streams farther afield on an extended-day field trip to Powdermill Nature Reserve, the museum’s environmental research center.
