How do you see yourself? How do others see you? What messages do you want to communicate? How do you represent yourself? Explore the art of self-portraiture and selfies while projecting all of the many parts of yourself out into the world. We will use museum spaces as backdrops and settings for self-portraits that we create through drawing and photography.

What kinds of spaces can you design outdoors? Learn about animal architects and how they create their own spaces from natural materials. Explore materials and building techniques while creating spaces for making and playing. Build models, make drawings, and create life-sized spaces. Explore nearby Schenley Park and Carnegie Mellon's campus to see examples of different building techniques. This camp takes place mostly in the outdoor spaces around the museum.

From Middle-Earth to the Wizarding World, explore famous fantasy realms and make connections to their real-life inspirations. Examine the plant species of Uriel, Orien, and Camazotz. Uncover the creatures that call the Sea of Monsters home, and investigate the anatomy of a centaur. Meet real scientists and learn how they classify unbelievable species. Create your own fantasy realm and design the field guide to its magical plants, animals, and insects just like Newt Scamander’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

We will create ceramic cups, bowls, spoons, and woven baskets using the potter’s wheel and a variety of coil and slab hand-building techniques. Select and apply underglazes to give your work its finished appearance. We will find inspiration throughout the museum in decorative arts objects and still life paintings and create sketches to influence our ceramic projects. Projects will be fired and available for pickup at the museum three to four weeks after camp.

Go outside every day to advance your skills in tracking animals and surveying their habitats for health and pollution indicators. Collect and analyze your own observations during a mini field study in Schenley Park.

Find inspiration and light in the artworks in the museum’s collection, and reach for the sun as we light up our solar-powered vessels. Projects will be fired and available for pickup at the museum three to four weeks after camp.

Join us at the museum for a movement-filled week of art-making and choreography throughout the galleries. Learning from multiple dance traditions, we will create a responsive relationship between mark-making, dance-making, and artworks throughout the museum. Prior dance experience is not required.

Design a house and learn how you can protect the earth at the same time in this online-only camp! Challenge yourself to conserve water, capture solar energy, and use only renewable materials as you design the house of your dreams! You’ll find inspiration from the collection at the museum and the Intelligent Workplace at CMU’s School of Architecture, and you’ll explore creative ways to design and build your house using a variety of architectural drawing and model-making methods. Camp is online and run through the Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Architecture Center for Architecture Explorations. Participants will need their own computer and internet access.

Piece together a prehistoric mystery as you explore the science of paleontology. Map and excavate a mock dig site, wrap your finds in plaster fossil jackets, and transport them to the laboratory classroom. Build your fossil prep skills by reconstructing discoveries and analyzing bones. Stack up your finds against the specimens in the exhibition Dinosaurs in Their Time to discover what bone you’ve found, which dinosaur it came from, and how that part of the skeleton functioned.
