Go outside every day to advance your skills in tracking animals and surveying their habitats for health and pollution indicators. Collect and analyze your own observations during a mini field study at Powdermill Nature Reserve.

Shhh.... Can you keep a secret? Explore the secret world of animals that is normally hidden from human eyes. How do they eat, sleep, and play? Investigate the different habitats of animals big and small. Discover nature from an animal’s perspective and understand the importance of wildlife conservation. Make daily visits to the animal exhibits around the museum and venture outside to observe urban nature.

Become an entomologist at Powdermill! Use scientific tools, set insect traps, and create your own take-home collection of local bugs. Learn to identify pollution indicators from the stream and make seed paper art to help pollinators thrive. Discover insect anatomy through grasshopper dissections. Let your imagination run wild as you construct original bug sculptures inspired by science and your own creativity. Keep a scientific journal of your work as you explore a week of amazing arthropods!

Visit with leaders of local organizations, including BirdSafe Pittsburgh to learn what you can do to make city life better for all of Pittsburgh’s inhabitants. Lace up your sneakers—this is an active camp with daily hiking and public transit excursions.
