Welcome to the show! Art Cat needs your help putting on the best circus in town. From planning and performing to creating costumes and sets, Art Cat can’t do this without you! Bring your big ideas and be ready to wow the audience; your family is invited to the final performance on the last day of camp.

Take a stroll across Japan by viewing our exhibition of Hiroshige's Tokaido Road. Inspired by this work, campers will map out a journey of their own, creating a traveler's guide and models of stops taken along the route. Where will travelers rest? What is the landscape like? Where does your journey begin and where does it end? Come and get lost with us!

Push, pull, and squish clay into anything you can imagine—from functional vessels like bowls and cups you can actually use to sculpted figures of your pet or an imaginative creature of your own design! Try out the potter's wheel and learn hand-building techniques inspired by artists in the museum collection. Use colorful glazes to give your work a personal touch. Projects will be fired and available for pick-up three to four weeks after camp.

Big, bigger, biggest! Design and build a skyscraper, a giant house, or an extra tall school—stretch your imagination to think of how to make it happen. Experiment with peers to find the best ways to build big with different materials. Bring your imagination and your biggest ideas!

Are you fascinated by the possibilities of life on other planets? Making plans for that future reality requires the creative thinking of both artists and scientists, and that means you! Spend a week combining what we know from science with the speculative and creative thinking process of artists to invent what humans will need to eat, sleep, work, and play in worlds we can only imagine. Learn the strategies of design thinking to iterate concepts for what buildings and cities will look like, what our smart clothing will do, and how we will travel around a planet that’s not at all like earth.

Printmaking is a way of making multiple versions of your original image, sometimes making subtle changes from one to the next. Find inspiration in the exhibition Hiroshige’s Tokaido Road and in the museum’s galleries. Learn historical techniques like etching and modern processes like silkscreen. Reuse printed materials to create brand new artworks. Experiment with the printing press to create works in a series.

3, 2, 1... Action! Become an art camp filmmaker and collaborate with your fellow campers to create movies that will be complied onto a DVD. Find inspiration from videos in the collection, create stories for people depicted in paintings, and get creative with art materials to create scenery and props for your productions. DVDs of your movies will be mailed home at the end of the summer.

Journey into the wonder of the natural world as an artist and an explorer. Take a nature walk through the museum galleries and discover how artists are inspired and fascinated by the natural world. Sketch freshly plowed fields, watery shores, and the curious creatures that live within these artworks. Venture outside and to Phipps Conservatory to collect found materials, textures, and colors—then make your own observations in your nature journal. Use your senses to paint, sketch, and design, then transform your ideas into your own mixed-media Art Garden.

Have you ever wondered how graphics are reproduced on T-shirts, posters, or sneakers? Printmaking allows you to create multiple versions of an original image, sometimes making subtle changes from one to the next. To see this art in practice, you’ll visit the museum’s galleries and view examples by master printmakers, learn historical techniques like etching, and modern processes like silkscreen. Learn the types of images and levels of detail that work best for each technique and what curators notice when evaluating prints. You can even reuse your experimental printed materials to create brand new mixed-media artworks. All materials are provided.

Whether you are a skilled potter or eager to get your hands into wet clay for the first time, this workshop will provide expert guidance to achieve your artistic goals. Learn how to raise a form on the potter’s wheel and practice a variety of hand-building techniques, all inspired by the museum’s outstanding collection of ceramic art. Select and apply glazes to give your work its finished appearance. You’ll even visit the kiln room to learn about the firing process. Work will be fired and available for pick-up three to four weeks after the workshop. All materials are provided.

Explore traditional art forms through the lens of fiber arts—a branch of art making that uses natural or synthetic fibers or is related to fabrics or weaving. The museum collection offers lots of fashion and fabric inspiration from places and times throughout history and today.
