It’s a beautiful day in Art Cat’s neighborhood! Together we will explore being kind to our neighbors through art-making. Learn how creating for others can be an expression of compassion, kindness, and lots of fun! Draw, paint, and collage works of art for your family or friends; collaborate on a performance to share with fellow campers; and design and operate a kindness mobile.

Design a house and learn how you can protect the earth at the same time! Challenge yourself to conserve water, capture solar energy, and use only renewable materials as you design the house of your dreams! You’ll find inspiration by visiting the galleries and the Intelligent Workplace at CMU’s School of Architecture, and you’ll explore creative ways to design and build your house by using a variety of architectural drawing and model-making methods. Camp includes a trip to Carnegie Mellon University’s Intelligent Workplace.

Become an architect for animals, a designer for dolls, or a carpenter for cuddly things! From the grandeur of the Hall of Architecture to the museum’s exquisite miniatures and furniture collection, finding ideas to shape the ideal environment for your toy is easy. Go on a quest to find animals in their habitats and read stories to find more inspiration. Draw sketches, design floor plans, create models, and then build a tiny home for your favorite toy. Your toys receive their very own key to their new homes on the last day of camp!

3, 2, 1... action! Become an art camp filmmaker and collaborate with your fellow campers to create movies. Find inspiration from the collection, create stories about the people depicted in paintings, and get creative with art materials to make scenery and props for your productions. DVDs of your movies will be mailed home at the end of the summer.

Come one, come all to the best show in town—a circus created entirely by YOU! Circus-master Art Cat has created a gallery search designed to inspire campers to create costumes, design and paint sets, and plan a performance for the last day of camp! Read circus-themed stories, sing songs, sketch your ideas, practice your best tricks, and enjoy the art-filled show all week long! Families are invited to attend the circus performance on the last day of camp!

Journey into the wonder of the natural world as an artist and explorer. Take a nature walk through the museum galleries and discover how artists are inspired and fascinated by the world outside. Venture outdoors to see sculptures installed around the museum and go to Phipps Conservatory to sketch textures, shapes, and colors inspired by nature. Use your senses to paint, sketch, design, and transform your ideas into your own outdoor artwork.

Learn from the past and jump into the future as you discover how well-designed cities and community-wide practices can protect our environment. Make sketches, create drawings, and build models. Take a tour of places around Oakland, including CMU’s School of Architecture, and learn how art and technology combine to create sustainable buildings and landscapes. Find inspiration in the museum’s galleries for your own earth-friendly designs and then work as a team to design and build a model eco-city from the ground up. Camp includes a trip to Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Architecture.

Make extraordinary art of out of the ordinary by getting inventive and intentional with recycled materials and thinking about their environmental impact. Explore the way artists reduce, reuse, recycle, and respond to environmental issues. Find inspiration for your own artwork in the exhibition Counterpressures, where local artists respond to global warming. Spend time outside exploring the environment to find inspiration for your drawings and paintings. Take a trip to Phipps Conservatory to visit the Center for Sustainable Landscapes and create a collaborative installation with your fellow campers.

Art Cat is ready to party! Create the ultimate art party with fun and unique materials. Search the galleries for your favorite artworks and artists to “invite” to your art-filled party! Make your own art party decorations, paint a party portrait, create party favors, design invitations, and sculpt your own party food inspired by your museum adventures. Invite your family to an end-of-the-week celebration of all things art!

Travel to the future and make art and architecture inspired by an imagined future world. Think creatively about the world you know to create landscapes, architecture, clothing, and games that people of the future might inhabit, wear, and use. Catch a glimpse of futuristic landscapes and architecture in the museum’s galleries, then return to the present on the last day of camp to share your future paintings, drawings, and sculptures with your family and friends. Camp includes a trip to Carnegie Mellon University’s digital fabrication laboratory.

Use your feet, your hands, and your body to create sculptures that move, paintings that vibrate, and a parade performance through the galleries. Art Cat wants to get creative while caring about the planet! Get inspired and inventive with recycled materials and everyday objects to create extraordinary art out of the ordinary. Explore the ways artists reduce, reuse, recycle, and respond to environmental issues. Draw, sculpt, and collage a new material challenge from Art Cat every day. Collaborate with other campers to create an unconventional art installation in your studio that will impress your friends.

Apply left-brained thinking to a right-brained activity for unexpected results! Observe works of art in the galleries and hypothesize some "what-ifs"—then head to the lab to experiment. Ink, graphite, rubber bands, straws, paint brushes, paper, wood, plastic—let materials take you on a scientific (and fun) drawing journey! Don't forget to record your process and results in your sketchbook/field journal. Make a series of pieces based on your findings.

Create a creature! Go on a hunt for creatures in the paintings and sculptures of the CMOA galleries! After studying these strange and sometimes imaginary animals, you’ll think about where creatures might live and what they might eat. Visit animal dioramas in CMNH for even more ideas. Use these expeditions as inspiration to imagine, design, sketch, and sculpt a super-creature who might inhabit a place in the art! Capture your creature in a photo in its museum habitat and collaborate with fellow campers to a creature magazine featuring every creature from camp!

Join us for an end-of-summer bonus week featuring fun and games in the art museum. Warm up by sketching inside and outside of the museum. Stretch your art endurance as you try drawing, painting, and sculpture. Take your imagination and your skills to the next level as you participate in fun art challenges. These activities will be a cool cool-down after a summer full of art camp fun.
