Venture out to see sculptures installed around the museum. Go to Phipps Conservatory to collect textures, shapes, and colors in your sketchbook inspired by nature. Use your senses to paint, sketch, design, and transform your ideas into your own outdoor artwork.

Creativity can and will get messy in this camp that’s perfect for mess lovers! Have fun exploring the messier side of art with all sorts of materials, from splatter paint to papier-mâché both inside and outside the museum! Read stories and go on adventures while learning new art-making techniques to express your messiest ideas. You provide the creativity; we provide the materials and smocks.

Printmaking allows you to create multiple versions of an original image, sometimes making subtle changes from one to the next. To see this art in practice, you’ll visit the museum’s galleries and view examples by master printmakers. Learn historical techniques like etching and modern processes like silkscreen. Gain an understanding of the types of images and levels of detail that work best for each technique. You can even reuse your experimental printed materials to create brand new mixed-media artworks.

It’s Fashion Week at CMOA! Be part of the team that designs, creates, and models original works of textile art. Learn how to tie-dye, hand sew, and use a sewing machine. Become a color explorer in this color-full camp! Mix paint to make new colors, sort different-colored objects, and build with colorful materials all week long. Read color-filled stories, play color I spy, and take a color journey through the galleries to look at all the different ways artists use color in their work. Learn about the color wheel and make your very own artwork in every color!

The ability to draw starts with being a good observer. Whether your goal is to capture the world around you with accuracy or create expressive compositions with abstract marks, textures, and patterns, this workshop offers guidance and exercises designed to strengthen your skills. Sketch works of art from the museum’s collection, in outdoor and architectural spaces, and draw the objects around you in the studio. Experiment with a variety of drawing materials and media. Refine your favorite works into finished compositions. Professional sketchbook provided. This half-day workshop meets on Carnegie Mellon’s campus. Student will make regular walking trips to CMOA.

Apply left-brained thinking to a right-brained activity for unexpected results! Observe works of art in the galleries for ideas, hypothesize some “what-ifs,” then head to the lab for experimentation. Ink, graphite, rubber bands, straws, paint brushes, paper, wood, and plastic materials take you on a scientific journey! Don’t forget to record your process and results in your sketchbook/field journal. Then make a series of pieces based on your findings.

Calling all wiggle worms! Join us at the museum for a wiggle-and-squiggle-filled art-making week! How many different marks can you make by moving your hand and arm in different ways? How else can you move paint around on paper if you don’t use your hands or a brush? Use movement as inspiration for mark-making using pencils, pastels, and paint. Wiggle (and squiggle) your way through the galleries to find ideas for your experiments.
