The ability to draw relies on being a good observer. Whether your goal is to capture the world around you with accuracy or to create expressive compositions with abstract marks, textures, and patterns, this workshop offers guidance and exercises designed to strengthen your skills. Sketch works of art from Carnegie Museum of Art’s collection in outdoor and architectural spaces and draw the objects around you in the studio. Experiment with a variety of drawing materials and media. Refine your favorite works into finished compositions. Professional sketchbook provided. This workshop meets on Carnegie Mellon’s campus. Students will make regular walking trips to Carnegie Museum of Art.

Learn how creating with others can demonstrate compassion, kindness, and be lots of fun! Draw, paint, and collage works of art for your family or friends, collaborate on a performance to share with fellow campers, and design and operate a kindness mobile.

Get inventive and intentional with recycled materials to create extraordinary art out of the ordinary, while thinking about environmental impact. Explore the way artists reduce, reuse, recycle, and respond to environmental issues. Spend time outside exploring the environment for inspiration in your drawings and paintings. Take a trip to Phipps Conservatory to visit the Center for Sustainable Landscapes and collaborate with your fellow campers to create a collaborative installation.

Think like an artist as you experiment with a wide range of tools to try out marks, smudges, and textures that can become expressive works of art. Discover how nontraditional materials and processes can fuel your creative imagination. Think creatively about the world you know to create landscapes, architecture, clothing, and games that people of the future might inhabit, wear, and use. Catch a glimpse of “futurist” landscapes and architecture in the museum’s galleries, then return to the present on the last day of camp to report back to your family and friends with your paintings, drawings, and sculptures. Includes a walking trip to Carnegie Mellon University!

Design a dream house of the future while exploring green technologies at Carnegie Mellon’s School of Architecture. Learn how smart architecture can conserve natural resources and combine this new knowledge with design inspiration from the galleries to create an environmentally conscious home. Through the use of 3D modeling software and more, you will build new skills, unlock your creativity as a green designer, and build your architecture portfolio. This workshop meets on Carnegie Mellon’s campus and uses CMU’s digital studio. Students will make regular walking trips to Carnegie Museum of Art.

Wiggle (and squiggle) your way through the galleries to find ideas for your experiments. The sketchbook can be one of the artist’s most important tools. Learn how to bind and make your own sketchbook and use it as a place to explore different mediums, learn a variety of techniques, create color palettes, explore patterns, and keep a collection of things that inspire you. Work with a teaching artist to develop your observational drawing skills and learn to use a variety of drawing tools. Spend a week drawing on location in the museum’s galleries and exhibitions as well as outdoors in Oakland. Build up your sketchbook with a variety of quick studies and more finished compositions while drawing landscapes, architecture, and portraits from observation. Create a creature! Go on the hunt for creatures in the paintings and sculptures of Carnegie Museum of Art's galleries! After studying these strange and sometimes imagined animals, you’ll think about where they might live and what they might eat. Visit animal dioramas in Carnegie Museum of Natural History for even more ideas. Use these adventurous expeditions as inspiration to imagine, design, sketch, and sculpt a super creature who might inhabit a place in the art! Capture your creature in a photo in its museum habitat and collaborate with fellow campers on a creature-zine featuring every critter from camp!

Expand upon your drawing skills and broaden your artistic repertoire by trying out various printmaking techniques and exploring new ways of making images. No printmaking experience required. Screen print like Andy Warhol, carve blocks for linocut prints and even experiment with cyanotypes. You’ll create a series with your prints and work alongside teaching artists to explore how drawing can enhance your prints. Work on both skills throughout the week and visit the museum’s collection to find inspiration and learn new techniques. This workshop meets on Carnegie Mellon’s campus. Apply left-brained thinking to a right-brained activity for unexpected results! Observe works of art in the galleries for ideas, hypothesize some "what-ifs," then head to the lab for experimentation. Ink, graphite, rubber bands, straws, paint brushes, paper, wood, plastic—let materials take you on a scientifically fun drawing journey! Don't forget to record your process and results in your sketchbook/field journal. Make a series of pieces based on your findings.
