Fiber art

Become a part of a team that designs, constructs, and models original works of textile art. Learn how to tie-dye, hand sew, and use a sewing machine. Create your own fabrics with stamped patterns or other unique embellishments using diverse materials. Discover new ideas from our artwork collection and create an inspiration board of sketches, objects and fabric swatches to help develop your designs. Organize and star in a runway show at the museum to show off your collections.

Sample many aspects of fashion in this introduction to construction, design and styling. Learn the basics of joining fabric with hand and machine sewing, explore textiles, and learn to balance colors and patterns. Become inspired by the innovative fashion designers and fiber artists of today and begin your own fashion portfolio. Using tailoring, draping, and embellishment to reimagine a standard garment and showcase your work in a final show and presentation. This workshop meets on Carnegie Mellon University’s campus Tuesday through Friday. Students will make regular trips to Carnegie Museum of Art.
