It’s a beautiful day in our art-filled neighborhood! Together we will explore being kind to our neighbors through art-making. Learn how creating with others can demonstrate compassion, kindness, and be lots of fun! Draw, paint, and collage works of art for your family or friends, collaborate on a performance to share with fellow campers, and design and operate a kindness mobile.

Creating something realistic is just one way to give visual form to your world. Think like an artist as you experiment with a wide range of tools to try out marks, smudges, and textures that can become expressive works of art. Discover how nontraditional materials and processes can fuel your creative imagination. Look at work by artists who think beyond pencils and paintbrushes to push the ideas of drawing and painting in innovative directions. Workshop meets on Carnegie Mellon’s campus and includes visits to CMU’s Digital Fabrication Lab. Students will make regular walking trips to Carnegie Museum of Art.

Make your own art party decorations, paint a party portrait, create party favors, design invitations, and sculpt your own party food inspired by your museum adventures. Invite your family to an end-of-the-week celebration of all things art!

Learn a variety of painting techniques and color mixing strategies while you playfully paint all week! Explore different paintable surfaces, from paper and canvas to found materials. Use marbles, straws, hands, toys, and other imaginative tools to create interesting textures and playful creations with paint while you spray, splatter, and scrape. Collaborate with your fellow campers to create a classroom mural and show off your project in a playful art show at the end of the week.

Get to know great paintings in the museum’s galleries. Discover first-hand the wide range of techniques for applying paint from smooth as glass to thick and textured. Build your skills through daily experiments with a variety of painting methods and color mixing strategies. Choose your favorite approach to create your own masterpieces.

Apply left-brained thinking to a right-brained activity for unexpected results! Observe works of art in the galleries for ideas, hypothesize some "what-ifs," then head to the lab for experimentation. Ink, graphite, rubber bands, straws, paint brushes, paper, wood, plastic—let materials take you on a scientifically fun drawing journey! Don't forget to record your process and results in your sketchbook/field journal. Make a series of pieces based on your findings.
