It’s a beautiful day in Art Cat’s neighborhood! Together we will explore being kind to our neighbors through art-making. Learn how creating for others can be an expression of compassion, kindness, and lots of fun! Draw, paint, and collage works of art for your family or friends; collaborate on a performance to share with fellow campers; and design and operate a kindness mobile.

Discover which methods suit your expressive goals—smooth brushstrokes or thick and textured impasto? Bold or muted colors? Canvas or more nontraditional surfaces? Will you incorporate other media? The museum’s collection and exhibitions offer inspiration for your work!

Play with paint all week long! Learn a variety of painting techniques and color-mixing strategies while you play. Explore different paintable surfaces, from paper and canvas to found materials. Use marbles, straws, hands, toys, and other imaginative tools to create interesting textures and playful creations while you spray, splatter, and scrape all things paint. Collaborate with your fellow campers to create a classroom mural and show off your creations in a playful art show at the end of the week.

Gain insight into your work and the work of your peers through group critique. Find inspiration in the museum’s collection. This workshop meets on Carnegie Mellon’s campus. Student will make regular walking trips to Carnegie Museum.

Practice techniques inspired by artworks in the museum collection to create your very own sculptures with air-dry clay, model Model Magic, and papier-mâché. Explore other squishable materials and art art-making techniques with paint, shaving cream, and even slime!

Come one, come all to the best show in town—a circus created entirely by YOU! Circus-master Art Cat has created a gallery search designed to inspire campers to create costumes, design and paint sets, and plan a performance for the last day of camp! Read circus-themed stories, sing songs, sketch your ideas, practice your best tricks, and enjoy the art-filled show all week long! Families are invited to attend the circus performance on the last day of camp!

Journey into the wonder of the natural world as an artist and explorer. Take a nature walk through the museum galleries and discover how artists are inspired and fascinated by the world outside. Venture outdoors to see sculptures installed around the museum and go to Phipps Conservatory to sketch textures, shapes, and colors inspired by nature. Use your senses to paint, sketch, design, and transform your ideas into your own outdoor artwork.

Creating something realistic is just one way to give visual form to your world. Think like an artist as you experiment with a wide range of tools to try out marks, smudges, and textures that can become expressive works of art. Discover how nontraditional materials and processes can fuel your creative imagination. Look at work by artists who think beyond pencils and paintbrushes to push the ideas of drawing and painting in innovative directions. Workshop meets on Carnegie Mellon’s campus and includes visit to CMU’s Digital Fabrication Lab. Students will make regular walking trips to Carnegie Museum of Art.

Creativity can and will get messy in this camp—perfect for mess lovers! Have fun exploring the messier side of art with all sorts of messy materials, from splatter paint to papier-mâché, both inside and outside of the museum! Read stories and go on adventures while learning new art-making techniques to express your messiest ideas. You provide the creativity; we provide the materials and smocks!

Make extraordinary art of out of the ordinary by getting inventive and intentional with recycled materials and thinking about their environmental impact. Explore the way artists reduce, reuse, recycle, and respond to environmental issues. Find inspiration for your own artwork in the exhibition Counterpressures, where local artists respond to global warming. Spend time outside exploring the environment to find inspiration for your drawings and paintings. Take a trip to Phipps Conservatory to visit the Center for Sustainable Landscapes and create a collaborative installation with your fellow campers.

Art Cat is ready to party! Create the ultimate art party with fun and unique materials. Search the galleries for your favorite artworks and artists to “invite” to your art-filled party! Make your own art party decorations, paint a party portrait, create party favors, design invitations, and sculpt your own party food inspired by your museum adventures. Invite your family to an end-of-the-week celebration of all things art!

Travel to the future and make art and architecture inspired by an imagined future world. Think creatively about the world you know to create landscapes, architecture, clothing, and games that people of the future might inhabit, wear, and use. Catch a glimpse of futuristic landscapes and architecture in the museum’s galleries, then return to the present on the last day of camp to share your future paintings, drawings, and sculptures with your family and friends. Camp includes a trip to Carnegie Mellon University’s digital fabrication laboratory.
