Push, pull, and squish clay into anything you can imagine—from a bowl that you can actually use to sculpted figures of your pet or an imaginative creature of your own design. Try out the potter’s wheel and learn hand-building techniques, inspired by artists in the museum collection. Use colorful glazes to give your work a personal touch. Projects will be fired and available for pickup three to four weeks after camp. Materials fee included in price.

Practice techniques inspired by artworks in the museum collection to create your very own sculptures with air-dry clay, model Model Magic, and papier-mâché. Explore other squishable materials and art art-making techniques with paint, shaving cream, and even slime!

Creativity can and will get messy in this camp—perfect for mess lovers! Have fun exploring the messier side of art with all sorts of messy materials, from splatter paint to papier-mâché, both inside and outside of the museum! Read stories and go on adventures while learning new art-making techniques to express your messiest ideas. You provide the creativity; we provide the materials and smocks!

What could be more fun than transforming wet clay into an object of your own design? Combine technical skill with imagination by learning how to raise a form on the potter’s wheel and practicing a variety of hand-building techniques. Make boxes, bowls, and cups or sculpt animal forms that are realistic or abstract. Select and apply underglazes to give your work its finished appearance. Find inspiration in the artworks in the museum’s collection. Projects will be fired and available for pickup 3–4 weeks after camp at the museum. Materials fee included in price.

Make extraordinary art of out of the ordinary by getting inventive and intentional with recycled materials and thinking about their environmental impact. Explore the way artists reduce, reuse, recycle, and respond to environmental issues. Find inspiration for your own artwork in the exhibition Counterpressures, where local artists respond to global warming. Spend time outside exploring the environment to find inspiration for your drawings and paintings. Take a trip to Phipps Conservatory to visit the Center for Sustainable Landscapes and create a collaborative installation with your fellow campers.

Art Cat is ready to party! Create the ultimate art party with fun and unique materials. Search the galleries for your favorite artworks and artists to “invite” to your art-filled party! Make your own art party decorations, paint a party portrait, create party favors, design invitations, and sculpt your own party food inspired by your museum adventures. Invite your family to an end-of-the-week celebration of all things art!

Travel to the future and make art and architecture inspired by an imagined future world. Think creatively about the world you know to create landscapes, architecture, clothing, and games that people of the future might inhabit, wear, and use. Catch a glimpse of futuristic landscapes and architecture in the museum’s galleries, then return to the present on the last day of camp to share your future paintings, drawings, and sculptures with your family and friends. Camp includes a trip to Carnegie Mellon University’s digital fabrication laboratory.

Calling all wiggle worms! Join us at the museum for a wiggle- and -squiggle-filled art-making week! Use movement as inspiration for mark-making. Wiggle (and squiggle) your way through the galleries to find ideas for your experiments. Use your feet, your hands, and your body to create sculptures that move, paintings that vibrate, and a parade performance through the galleries. Think and create in three dimensions. From ancient to contemporary art, indoors to outside, discover the variety of media available for creating sculpture by studying the collection at Carnegie Museum of Art. Go beyond the marble figure and learn how to build things with a variety of media and processes, guided by a professional teaching artist. Take what inspires you into the studio to begin your own experiments. From sketches to finished work, use your creativity to bring your sculptures to life. Make something wearable, use plaster gauze to cast your own body, experiment with clay, or construct with fabric and found objects. Deconstruct existing objects and reimagine them to create something new. Develop your portfolio and gain insight into your work and the work of your peers through group critique and discussion. This workshop meets on Carnegie Mellon’s campus. Students will make regular walking trips to Carnegie Museum of Art.

Join Art Cat in the studio and galleries to get cookin’ with art! Go on a food-filled adventure to find works of art inspired by all things food. Sketch, paint, sculpt, and collage your own menu of artistic masterpieces. Collaborate with fellow campers to create and build a play kitchen installation. Create a creature! Go on a hunt for creatures in the paintings and sculptures of the CMOA galleries! After studying these strange and sometimes imaginary animals, you’ll think about where creatures might live and what they might eat. Visit animal dioramas in CMNH for even more ideas. Use these expeditions as inspiration to imagine, design, sketch, and sculpt a super-creature who might inhabit a place in the art! Capture your creature in a photo in its museum habitat and collaborate with fellow campers to a creature magazine featuring every creature from camp!
