Ages 8–10

Reach for the sky with tall structures inspired by nature and built by you! Learn about structures found in nature and human structures that reach amazing heights. How tall can you build with the materials you are given? Take a look at buildings like the Cathedral of Learning and the architecture on Carnegie Mellon's campus and find out! Test your ideas through drawings and model-making, learning about the design process as you explore. This camp takes place mostly in the outdoor spaces around the museum.

Hunt for salamanders, set up insect traps, and “fish” for microplankton on biology expeditions. Soar to new heights as you study seed dispersal. On hikes through nearby Schenley Park, find animals in woodland and aquatic habitats, from frogs in a pond to squirrels on a tree and everything in between. Outdoor adventures await!

Push, pull, and squish clay into anything you can imagine—from functional vessels like bowls and cups you can actually use to sculpted figures of your pet or an imaginative creature of your own design! Try out the potter's wheel and learn hand-building techniques inspired by artists in the museum collection. Use colorful underglazes to give your work a personal touch. Projects will be fired and available for pickup at the museum three to four weeks after camp.

Stretch your arms to make drawings as big as your body! Expand your vision to create your biggest ideas. Throughout the museum, we will locate artists’ BIG thoughts and techniques and come up with BIG questions to generate BIG drawings. We will make BIG chalk and BIG crayons to make drawings on BIG paper inside and outside of the museum.

It’s time for a movement-filled week of art-making! Let movement inspire your mark-making as you explore the galleries to find ideas for your experiments. Look at moving artworks and create your own! Use your feet, your hands, and your body to create sculptures that move, paintings that vibrate, and a parade performance through the galleries. Invite your family and friends to join us for our moving gallery celebration.

Earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis, and more—they’ve all changed life on our planet over and over again. Discover how people and ecosystems have responded to extreme events throughout geologic time. Construct model lava flows, asteroid impacts, and volcanoes. Build a model city and put it to the test with our mega-quake-tsunami challenge on Friday.

Put your newfound skills to the test on an outdoor adventure in nearby Schenley Park.

The landscape is your canvas! Journey into the natural world as an artist and adventurer. Take nature walks, sketch, draw, and journey through the museum galleries to discover how artists are inspired and fascinated by the world around them. Venture outdoors to see sculptures installed around the museum and visit Phipps Conservatory to sketch textures, shapes, and colors inspired by nature. Use your senses to paint, sketch, design, and transform your ideas into your own outdoor artwork. This camp takes place mostly in the outdoor spaces around the museum.
