Peek into PaleoLab where museum scientists prepare fossils every day. Go on a dinosaur dig. Make a mask of your favorite prehistoric beast, and move like a dinosaur in a special relay race.

Explore nature’s wild, weird, and wacky wonders. Investigate flying mammals, bizarre horns, and mixed-up dinosaurs. Scout through Hillman Hall of Minerals and Gems to find minerals that look like cookies, French fries, stars, and bubbles. Test out the science of food to find out what makes Jell-O transform from a liquid to a solid, and sink your teeth—literally—into a yeast experiment with rising bread!

Push, pull, and squish clay into anything you can imagine: from a bowl you can actually use to sculpted figures of your pet, or an imaginative creature of your own design. Try out the potter’s wheel and learn hand-building techniques inspired by artists in the museum collection. Use colorful glazes to give your work a personal touch. Projects will be fired and available for pick-up 3–4 weeks later. Materials fee included in price.

Let it go and explore all things frozen on an icy journey through the museum! Delve into the Arctic and Antarctic regions to learn how animals survive in sub-zero weather. Take a trip back in time to see prehistoric ice age animals. Make it snow in the middle of summer and form crystals with water. Experiment with the science of sublimation and learn how to make dry ice bubbles.

Come and catch them all! Join Pokéteam Carnegie to explore the natural world of Pokémon. Learn about different Pokémon, and examine their habitats to discover what makes them strong. Meet entomologists and compare the life cycle of pokébugs to real insects. Build and hatch your own creature egg. Create your own “pokéball” and Pokémon creature based on real features of amazing animals. Go on museum and Schenley Park quests to find Pokémon.

Calling all wiggle worms! Join us at the museum for a wiggle-and-squiggle-filled art-making week! How many different marks can you make by moving your hand and arm in different ways? How else can you move paint around on paper if you don’t use your hands or a brush? Use movement as inspiration for mark-making using pencils, pastels, and paint. Wiggle (and squiggle) your way through the galleries to find ideas for your experiments.

Join Art Cat on a color adventure! Mix paint to create new colors and create with a variety of colorful materials. Contemporary artist Ruth Root’s color-filled paintings on view in the museum are the inspiration for this Color Adventure! Learn about the color wheel and how artists choose color and why. Create artworks of your own in your favorite colors!

Conduct hands-on investigations of mud, rocks, minerals, and fossils. Enjoy edible experiments that demonstrate how rocks and minerals form. Take a hike to nearby Schenley Park to examine historic rock layers, and hunt for specimens to start your own collection. Study the fluorescent properties of different materials to inspire your own glow-in-the-dark design. Use rocks to create your own musical instrument and discover the many ways geology rocks!
