Conduct hands-on investigations of mud, rocks, minerals, and fossils. Enjoy edible experiments that demonstrate how rocks and minerals form. Take a hike to nearby Schenley Park to examine historic rock layers, and hunt for specimens to start your own collection. Study the fluorescent properties of different materials to inspire a glow-in-the-dark design. Use rocks to create your own musical instrument and discover the many ways geology rocks!

POP! BAM! WOW! Explore the superpowers of real-world animals and plan your transformation into an amazing superhero. See how your web slinging compares to that of Peter Parker and your friendly neighborhood garden spider. Find out if any animals can leap tall buildings in a single bound. Create a superhero league with your new camp friends, and join a friendly competition to test your powers.

Explore line, pattern, color, and texture through creative play and fun projects. Observe how artists draw in diverse ways and explore using unusual tools to make marks of your own. Work with a variety of drawing materials including oil pastel, chalk, and charcoal, and try your hand at printmaking methods to bulk up your drawing tool kit.

Uncover woodland wonders as you turn over stones, explore aquatic ecosystems, and look for life under leaves and logs. Conduct a digestion experiment, and use the power of the sun to make a tasty snack. Investigate diverse biomes throughout the museum. Build a bug condo and design a cozy compost bin for worms. Use your new nature knowledge to create your own nature game.

In a galaxy far, far away… is life really that different? Compare the plants, animals, and biomes of the Star Wars universe with those of our own world. Discover what makes a tauntaun so well-suited to its habitat, and design your own out-of-this-world creature. Investigate the science of Cloud City and examine real life crystals to determine which ones would give a lightsaber your favorite hue. Don your Jedi gear—it’s time to discover the science behind the fantasy!

Push, pull, squish, and play with clay into anything you can imagine. Be inspired by the organic forms of ceramic artist Beate Kuhn, mix mediums like found objects and plaster with multiple forms of clay, and construct figurative sculptures that stand, sit or dance suspended in motion. Kiln-fired projects will be fired and available for pick-up at the museum 3 to 4 weeks after camp.

Come and catch them all! Join Pokéteam Carnegie to explore the natural world of Pokémon. Learn about different Pokémon and examine their habitats to discover what makes them strong. Compare the life cycle of Pokébugs to real insects. Create your own Poké Ball and Pokémon creature based on real features of amazing animals. Go on quests in the museum and Schenley Park to find Pokémon.  

Please note: We value hands-on, real-world experiences for our campers. This camp is Pokémon themed, but campers should not expect to play PokémonGo on tech devices during camp.

Explore nature’s wild, weird, and wacky wonders. Investigate flying mammals, bizarre horns, and mixed-up dinosaurs. Scout through Hillman Hall of Minerals and Gems to find minerals that look like cookies, French fries, stars, and bubbles. Test out the science of food to find out what makes Jell-O transform from a liquid to a solid, and sink your teeth—literally—into a yeast experiment with rising bread!

Enter the world of the dinosaurs as you dive into prehistoric ecosystems in the exhibition Dinosaurs in Their Time. Perform hands-on investigations with mud, rocks, minerals, and fossils. Compare the skulls and teeth of predators and prey, and learn how dinosaurs digested food. Study specimens and then predict colors and patterns of dinosaur skin. Watch your own dinosaur adaptations evolve as you make a “Me-a-saurus.”
