Learn more about your favorite dinosaurs! Get an up-close look at real fossils in the exhibition Dinosaurs in Their Time. Find out where these big bones came from, and learn all about prehistoric animals. Dig for replica bones like a real paleontologist, make fossil casts, and study authentic dinosaur specimens. Meet the creatures that roamed with the dinosaurs—early mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and insects.

This half-day camp keeps pace with active 4- and 5-year-olds and includes a mid-morning snack.

The ability to draw relies on being a good observer. Whether your goal is to capture the world around you with accuracy or to create expressive compositions with abstract marks, textures, and patterns, this workshop offers guidance and exercises designed to strengthen your skills. Sketch works of art from Carnegie Museum of Art’s collection in outdoor and architectural spaces and draw the objects around you in the studio. Experiment with a variety of drawing materials and media. Refine your favorite works into finished compositions. Professional sketchbook provided. This workshop meets on Carnegie Mellon’s campus. Students will make regular walking trips to Carnegie Museum of Art.

Push, pull, and squish clay into anything you can imagine—from functional vessels like bowls and cups you can actually use to sculpted figures of your pet or an imaginative creature of your own design! Try out the potter's wheel and learn hand-building techniques inspired by artworks in the museum collection. Use colorful underglazes to give your work a personal touch. Projects will be fired and available for pick-up at the museum three to four weeks after camp. A $25 materials fee is included in the price of this camp.

Learn how creating with others can demonstrate compassion, kindness, and be lots of fun! Draw, paint, and collage works of art for your family or friends, collaborate on a performance to share with fellow campers, and design and operate a kindness mobile.

Scout through Hillman Hall of Minerals and Gems to find minerals that look like cookies, French fries, stars, and bubbles. Test out the science of food to find out what makes Jell-O transform from a liquid to a solid, and sink your teeth—literally—into a yeast experiment with rising bread!

Uncover the geological mysteries of caves and caverns. Learn lab techniques for analyzing rocks and minerals, then venture outdoors to practice the basics of geology field work on a hiking trip through Schenley Park. Explore the science of unique rock and mineral formations through hands-on experiments. Work with microscopes to investigate and identify fossils. Use your geology knowledge to interpret the hidden secrets of the world.

What responsibilities do architects have to their communities? How do architects work to address social injustice through their designs? Explore the design of temporary structures like the annual Serpentine Gallery pavilion or architecture that can respond to immediate needs, such as refugee housing. Explore the use of cutting-edge materials that address environmental concerns like pollution absorbing bricks and new ways of using renewable materials like cardboard and plants. Learn about the creation of inclusive landscapes while developing skills in drawing architectural plans and sections and try your hand at model-making. Use these projects to build a portfolio and demonstrate new skills and problem solving. This workshop meets on Carnegie Mellon’s campus. Get inventive and intentional with recycled materials to create extraordinary art out of the ordinary, while thinking about environmental impact. Explore the way artists reduce, reuse, recycle, and respond to environmental issues. Spend time outside exploring the environment for inspiration in your drawings and paintings. Take a trip to Phipps Conservatory to visit the Center for Sustainable Landscapes and collaborate with your fellow campers to create a collaborative installation.

Meet weird prehistoric creatures and some of nature’s coolest critters. Get your hands on mystery slime, observe a slithery snake, and build an obstacle course for worms! Examine the movements, habitats, and senses of animals with daily experiments. Get creative with chemistry to test scientific phenomena as you mix emulsions and test what floats in slimy substances.

Nature builds things up and tears them down—and so can you! Explore how humans and animals construct homes, buildings, and dens. Construct a classroom compost bin to delve into decomposition, and conduct an experiment to test the strength of the pyramids. Throughout the week, you’ll undertake a habitat design challenge using only naturally available resources, plus visit Powdermill Nature Reserve to gain inspiration from nature.

Meet entomologists and compare the life cycle of Pokébugs to real insects. Build and hatch a creature egg. Create your own Poké Ball and Pokémon creature based on real features of amazing animals. Go on museum and Schenley Park quests to find Pokémon.

3, 2, 1... Action! Become an art camp filmmaker! Find inspiration from Carnegie Museum of Art’s collection and learn about the stories told in artworks. Bring your drawings, paintings, and sculptures to life in an animated stop-action sequence. Play, practice, perform, and collaborate with your fellow campers to create a short movie in the galleries! Use art materials to make scenery and props for your productions. Invite friends and family to your art movie premiere on the last day of camp.
