Give your fingers a workout by rolling coils, smooshing slabs, and constructing artworks using clay. Be inspired by the organic forms of our sculpture garden, mix found objects and plaster with multiple forms of clay, and construct figurative sculptures that stand, sit, or dance suspended in motion. Any fired work will be available for pickup three to four weeks after the workshop camp.

Level up your knowledge of rocks as you examine gems, minerals, rocks, and fossils in the lab and throughout the museum. Learn the tools of the geologists’ trade on a rock walk in Schenley Park. Discover surprising ways we use rocks and minerals in everyday life. Experiment with the rock cycle and observe everyday items made from rocks and minerals, plus start your own collection to take home.

Build your knowledge of rocks, elements, volcanoes, and more as you explore the geology of Minecraft in the real world. Discover the different types of rocks and how they form, plus search the museum for favorite Minecraft minerals. Investigate the science behind volcanoes and lava flow, and learn about real-life uses of coal, ores, metals, and more.

Please note: We value hands-on, real-world experiences for our campers. This camp is Minecraft themed, but campers should not expect to play Minecraft on tech devices during camp.

Adventure out into the wild and search for treasure in the forest, meadow, and stream! Hone your observation skills and seek out oddities to amass into a creative collection. Learn how to use a metal detector, press plants, and recycle collected items to leave no trace in nature. This camp will keep you active while using your creativity to turn trash to treasure!

Powdermill Nature Reserve is located 60 miles outside of Pittsburgh in Rector, PA. Transportation is not provided between the museum and Powdermill; all camp families are expected to provide their own transportation to camp.

Develop your own modular worlds inspired by popular toys and games like Legos and Minecraft. Bring digital creations to life by constructing pixelated structures in three dimensions. Use Lego figures to create stop-motion animation and pull distinctive prints from the surface of each brick. Explore spaces around Oakland and work with your team to recreate their materials and silhouettes in Minecraft.

Meet weird prehistoric creatures and some of nature’s coolest critters! Get your hands on mystery slime, take a close look at reptile scales, and build an obstacle course for worms. Examine the movements, habitats, and senses of animals with daily experiments. Measure and make observations during a gummy worm dissection. Get creative with chemistry to investigate scientific phenomena as you mix emulsions and test what floats in slimy substances.

Calling all druids, wizards, and rogues! Immerse yourself in this game-based camp full of quests and unforgettable challenges. Create unique characters and go on adventures in a prehistoric world of giant dragonflies and the real-life “dragons” we know as dinosaurs. Explore hidden spaces in the museum and learn how caves form. Uncover the science of biomimicry, plus investigate interesting insects and nocturnal creatures. Roll the dice and see what missions lie ahead!

Use natural and human-made fibers to weave, hand sew, and tie-dye soft sculptures or wearable artworks worthy of a runway or art gallery. Have fun with fabrics and invent your own unique pattern with printmaking, sculpt with foam, or make marks using embroidery. Work with your classmates to collaborate on challenges that will push the boundaries of art and fashion.

Get ready to see Pittsburgh like you’ve never seen it before! Trek across the city by foot and Pittsburgh Regional Transit to find out what makes our wonderful city unique. Visit famous ‘Burgh locations like the bustling Strip District, colorful Randyland, and beautiful Point State Park. Discover the sports, bridges, architecture, and organizations that put Pittsburgh on the map. Navigate through our area’s kaleidoscope of cultural traditions. Lace up your sneakers—this is an active camp with daily hiking and public transit excursions.

Total fee includes passes for Pittsburgh Regional Transit.

Grab a magnifying glass and explore the world of bugs! Learn how insects move, crawl, walk, and fly. Conduct experiments with real bugs. Investigate how different critters make sounds, and test the strength of beetles. Use microscopes to take a closer look at colorful butterfly wings. Act like your favorite insect and participate in a “Pitts-bug” marathon. Venture outside to uncover nearby insect habitats, plus build your own insect model and bug house to take home.

Please note: Pre-camp and post-camp care are not available for Hi-Fives! campers. Hi-Fives! campers must be picked up by 3:15 p.m.

Become a junior researcher and experience real science in action at Powdermill! Spend the week participating in active science in the field. Uncover an environmental issue, develop a research question and hypothesis, and collect data to prove your point. Work as a team to learn research methods to address real problems. Your group will be in full control of what you explore! At the end of the week, present your findings for review by a Powdermill ecologist.
