Push, pull, squish, and play with clay into anything you can imagine—from a bowl you can actually use to sculpted figures of your pet, or an imaginative creature of your own design. Try out the potter’s wheel and learn hand-building techniques inspired by artworks in the museum collection. Use colorful underglazes to give your work a personal touch. Projects will be fired and available for pick-up at the museum three to four weeks after camp. A $25 materials fee is included in the price of this camp.

Learn more about your favorite dinosaurs! Get an up-close look at real fossils in the exhibition Dinosaurs in Their Time. Find out where these big bones came from, and learn all about prehistoric animals. Dig for replica bones like a real paleontologist, make fossil casts, and study authentic dinosaur specimens. Meet the creatures that roamed with the dinosaurs—early mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and insects.

This half-day camp keeps pace with active 4- and 5-year-olds and includes a mid-morning snack.

Apply left-brained thinking to a right-brained activity for unexpected results! Observe works of art in the galleries for ideas, hypothesize some "what-ifs," then head to the lab for experimentation. Ink, graphite, rubber bands, straws, paint brushes, paper, wood, plastic—let materials take you on a scientifically fun drawing journey! Don't forget to record your process and results in your sketchbook/field journal. Make a series of pieces based on your findings.

A summer camp adventure 65 million years in the making! Piece together prehistoric evidence as you investigate how dinosaurs lived and why they died. Extract DNA from modern-day relatives of dinosaurs. Take a hike through the museum and nearby Schenley Park to compare today’s world to that of the dinosaurs. Build a full habitat, complete with life-size dinosaur murals to transform your classroom into Jurassic Planet.

Explore moving artworks and create your own! Use your feet, your hands, and your body to create sculptures that move, paintings that vibrate, and a parade performance through the galleries. Express yourself through painting. Learn techniques by comparing old master paintings to the work of artists who continue to reinvent painting today. Discover which methods suit your expressive goals—smooth brushstrokes or thick and textured impasto? Bold or muted colors? Canvas or more nontraditional surfaces? Gain insight into your work and the work of your peers through group critique. The museum’s collection and exhibitions will offer inspiration. This workshop meets on Carnegie Mellon’s campus. Meet entomologists and compare the life cycle of Pokébugs to real insects. Build and hatch a creature egg. Create your own Poké Ball and Pokémon creature based on real features of amazing animals. Conduct hands-on investigations of mud, rocks, minerals, and fossils. Enjoy edible experiments that demonstrate how rocks and minerals form. Take a hike to nearby Schenley Park to examine historic rock layers, and hunt for specimens to start your own collection. Study the fluorescent properties of different materials to inspire a glow-in-the-dark design. Use rocks to create your own musical instrument and discover the many ways geology rocks!

Design and create idyllic habitats for animals in the museum’s popular Living Collection. Interact with animals of all shapes and sizes on an animal themed day trip.

Examine the biology, medicine, and health issues unique to large animals. Start by investigating the amazing skeletal structures and circulatory systems that support giraffes and dinosaurs. Discover how giant creatures create their own mini-ecosystems with fascinating examples of symbiosis and parasitism between animals of all sizes. Visit a ranch for horseback riding, and compare modern and prehistoric horses at the museum to track their evolutionary path.

Think and create in three dimensions. From ancient to contemporary art, indoors to outside, discover the variety of media available for creating sculpture by studying the collection at Carnegie Museum of Art. Go beyond the marble figure and learn how to build things with a variety of media and processes, guided by a professional teaching artist. Take what inspires you into the studio to begin your own experiments. From sketches to finished work, use your creativity to bring your sculptures to life. Make something wearable, use plaster gauze to cast your own body, experiment with clay, or construct with fabric and found objects. Deconstruct existing objects and reimagine them to create something new. Develop your portfolio and gain insight into your work and the work of your peers through group critique and discussion. This workshop meets on Carnegie Mellon’s campus. Students will make regular walking trips to Carnegie Museum of Art.
