Do you dream of being a veterinarian? Investigate basic biology throughout the animal kingdom. Learn what you can do to help animals stay healthy in the wild and in your backyard. Design and create idyllic habitats for animals in the museum’s popular Living Collection. Interact with creatures of all shapes and sizes on an animal-themed day trip.

Day trip to Rolling Hills Ranch for horseback riding: museum pick-up at 3 p.m. Camp cost includes $50 activity fee.

Scout through Hillman Hall of Minerals and Gems to find minerals that look like cookies, French fries, stars, and bubbles. Test out the science of food to find out what makes Jell-O transform from a liquid to a solid, and sink your teeth—literally—into a yeast experiment with rising bread!

Examine the biology, medicine, and health issues unique to large animals. Investigate the amazing skeletal structures and circulatory systems that support giraffes and dinosaurs. Discover how giant creatures create their own mini-ecosystems with fascinating examples of symbiosis and parasitism between animals of all sizes. Visit a ranch for horseback riding and compare modern and prehistoric horses at the museum to track their evolutionary path.

Create original artworks inspired by your experiences, and show off your impressive collection of stamps and art to your friends and family.

Push, pull, and squish clay into anything you can imagine—from functional vessels like bowls and cups you can actually use to sculpted figures of your own design. Try out the potter's wheel and learn hand-building techniques inspired by artists in the museum collection. Use colorful underglazes to give your work a personal touch. Projects will be fired and available for pick-up at the museum 3-4 weeks after camp.

Learn more about your favorite dinosaurs! Get an up-close look at real fossils in the exhibition Dinosaurs in Their Time. Find out where these big bones came from and learn all about prehistoric animals. Dig for replica bones like a real paleontologist, make fossil casts, and study authentic dinosaur specimens. Meet the creatures that roamed with the dinosaurs—early mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and insects.  

This half-day camp keeps pace with active 4- and 5-year-olds and includes a mid-morning snack.

Design a dream house of the future while exploring green technologies at Carnegie Mellon’s School of Architecture. Learn how smart architecture can conserve natural resources and combine this new knowledge with design inspiration from the galleries to create an environmentally conscious home. Through the use of 3D modeling software and more, you’ll build new skills, unlock your creativity as a green designer, and build your architecture portfolio. This workshop meets at Carnegie Mellon University in the School of Architecture studios and will utilize computers and digital tools on campus. Students will make regular trips to Carnegie Museum of Art.

Through exciting experiments, explore how regional environments inform the way we live. Learn about local resources involved in American Indian traditions. Grind corn and use your cornmeal to make snacks. Compare insulation and water resistance in building materials and clothing. Discover the history of the earliest human habitation in North America on an extended day trip to Meadowcroft Rockshelter.

Conduct hands-on investigations of mud, rocks, minerals, and fossils. Enjoy edible experiments that demonstrate how rocks and minerals form. Take a hike to nearby Schenley Park to examine historic rock layers, and hunt for specimens to start your own collection. Study the fluorescent properties of different materials to inspire a glow-in-the-dark design. Use rocks to create your own musical instrument and discover the many ways geology rocks!

We'll explore the galleries and let the sights and sounds inspire us to create wiggle-tastic masterpieces. Get ready to use your feet, hands, and bodies to sculpt shifting sculptures, paint vibrating paintings, and put on a parade performance that will wiggle its way through the galleries.

Delve into experimental archaeology through design challenges such as mixing rock art pigments and using stone tools. Recreate baskets, pottery, and an ancient Egyptian fruit drink. Push, pull, squish, and play with clay into anything you can imagine—from a bowl you can actually use to sculpted figures of your pet, or an imaginative creature of your own design. Learn hand-building techniques inspired by artists in the museum collection, mix mediums like found objects and plaster with multiple forms of clay and construct an eclectic mosaic that can be hung for all to enjoy. Kiln-fired projects will be fired and available for pick-up at the museum 3-4 weeks after camp.
